In July, we concluded our year-long Cancer Survey in partnership with Stanford Cancer Institute to explore the attitudes and behaviors of Filipinos and Cancer with over 175 responses! Our Community Health Initiatives (CHI) Team has learned immensely from outreaching to our community and gaining insight on the health concerns of the Filipinx/a/o American (FilAm) community in Santa Clara County. Most importantly, we hope that our FilAm community knows that they have people that care about their health, thus we would like to use the research we have gained from this survey to push for health equity and provide the best access to care and resources as we can.
The CHI Team is continuing our health equity work with the “Holistic Healing” Series, actively creating new opportunities, classes, and workshops for our community right here in San Jose. We hope to see you at our future workshops both in-person and online.
If you would like to volunteer or host a workshop with us, please email our Co-Directors of Community Health Initiatives at jenn@leadfilipino.org & michelle@leadfilipino.org or follow us on social media to stay updated on future events!
What Our Team has to Say
“Being apart of this study and being able to recruit members from our community was an eye opening experience. We were able to engage with members from different ages, backgrounds and who had varying thoughts about our survey. Many were enthusiastic and excited that for much needed work, as many had expressed knowing or had been cancer survivors themselves. Research on Filipinos especially in Santa Clara County in regards to our health is hard to come by, this was an opportunity to allow our voices to be heard”

Jennifer Cayanan
Community Health Initiatives Co-Director
“This study is very meaningful to me and hits home, as I have had family members and loved ones who sadly lost their battle with cancer. Throughout the survey outreach, our team was able to not only bring awareness to how cancer impacts the FilAm community, but we were also able to hear the stories and experiences first-hand of those who were/are affected by cancer. To know that our efforts are touching individuals and their families, we want to honor them through this study and bring positive impact as an ever-lasting result.”
