Join us for the annual Delano Manongs Park Community Mixer Celebration happening on Sunday, September 20th, @10AM-2PM at Delano Manongs Park, Milpitas (1650 McCandless Dr, Milpitas, CA 95035). Our event celebrates the 61st anniversary of the Grape Strike movement through community-building, talk story, and park beautification with the City of Milpitas!
ABOUT THE DELANO MANONGS & THE GRAPE STRIKE MOVEMENT
The Delano Manongs Park honors the Filipino migrant farm workers who fought for labor rights in Delano, California, alongside Mexican farm workers. Manong, in the Iloko dialect, means “older brother” or “honored elder”.
In 1965, the farm workers boldly stopped work in the grape field as a protest for their poor living/working conditions. The Delano Grape Strike resulted in a 5-year boycott of grapes and the creation of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). In 1965, Itliong, along with Philip Vera Cruz, Pete Velasco, Ben Gines, and Andy Imutan, led the Delano Grape Strike, leading over 1,500 Filipino farmworkers in a strike against 10 vineyards. Today, we honor the resilience and strength of this movement, filled with both Filipino and Mexican farmworkers who were driven to create change & close gaps in inequality.
ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DELANO MANONGS PARK SAN JOSE & MILPITAS
In an open community poll in 2020, L.E.A.D Filipino organizer and lifelong San José resident, Daniel Lazo, submitted the name “Delano Manongs Park” as an entry for the naming of a new park on San José’s Capitol Avenue. As the first park in San José named in honor of Filipino American history, having community participation in the continued artistic and cultural development of the park was essential. Due to this, we began stewarding the park as a community-driven Delano Manongs Park Committee. Following this achievement, the City of Milpitas renamed its newest park on McCandles Drive Delano Manongs Park in 2024. Since the establishment of its park stewardship program at the beginning of 2026, LEAD Filipino has become a proud park steward of the second Delano Manongs Park in Milpitas, California. Join us for a special collaboration between NorCal Public Media, LEAD Filipino, CreaTV, and FANHS-SCV on Friday, September 25 from 5:30-8:30PM in an evening filled with a film screening of Generations California @ 250: Filipino Americans in San José followed by a panel with local community and youth leaders.
ABOUT THE FILM
When three generations of San José’s Filipina/x/o Americans get together, a mutual sense of identity, pride and hope spills over. 25-year-old filmmaker Brandon Gagante shares ideas with Ethnic Studies Professor Melissa Nievera-Lozano and their respected elder, Manong Robert, a retired aerospace engineer. They explore family origins, Anti-Asian hate, and what it means to be Filipina/x/o in 2026.

Join LEAD Filipino for a special Giving Circle gathering celebrating our 11th birthday and Filipino American History Month.
Admission is complimentary. Guests will have an opportunity during the evening to join the LEAD Filipino Giving Circle as monthly supporters.
Our Giving Circle brings together supporters who believe in investing in the long-term strength of Filipino American civic leadership. Through monthly giving, members help sustain the programs, organizing, leadership development, and community infrastructure that make our work possible year-round.
This intimate gathering will bring together professionals across government, technology, finance, law, higher education, philanthropy, and other sectors who share a commitment to strengthening Filipino American civic power.
Over appetizers and conversation at number5kitchen in San Carlos, we’ll reflect on 11 years of LEAD Filipino, share what we’re building next, and invite guests to become part of the Giving Circle through a monthly contribution at a level that works for them.
Whether you have supported LEAD Filipino for years or are just getting to know our work, we hope you’ll join us for an evening of meaningful conversation, new relationships, and investment in the next chapter of our community.
