About our Lola Scholarship
LEAD Filipino established the Mama Verang and Lola Remi Scholarship Fund (Lola Scholarship Fund) in 2021 to support Filipino American college students. Organized by Daniel Lazo, the fund is named in honor of his grandmothers, Mama Verang and Lola Remi, who were both educators and advocates for higher education. Mama Verang, a single mother and high school teacher in the Philippines, brought her family to the U.S. for a better life. Lola Remi, a hardworking tailor and farmer, ensured her seven children received a college education. The scholarship aims to address the high dropout rates among Filipinx/a/o American students in Santa Clara County, as highlighted in a recent San José Spotlight article.
