We are thrilled to announce the election of Meredith “Mer” Curry Nunez as Chair of LEAD Filipino’s Board. A seasoned nonprofit executive and civic leader, Mer has over 20 years of service in the charitable, education policy, and public sectors where she led her own consulting practice, previously chaired the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women and led the Northern California College Promise Coalition (NCCPC), where she now serves as the organization’s inaugural Executive Director.
LEAD Filipino Founder and Executive Director Dr. Angelica Cortez shares, “For the first six years of our existence, we provided services first and figured out the administration later – but as we continue to grow our voter registration, educational initiatives, and culturally responsive programs, having strong Board leadership is imperative to that process. Mer’s rich knowledge of our organization not only honors our grassroots approach but strengthens our community-defined practices around leadership development, cultural equity, and civic engagement that we will continue to deepen under her tenure as our inaugural Board Chair.”
Mer states, “I am honored to be the elected incoming and inaugural Board Chair of LEAD Filipino. Thank you to my pamilya board members, Founder and Executive Director Dr. Angelica Cortez, the LEAD Filipino team, and our many partners for this opportunity to collaborate here in San Jose and across California around civic participation and community action. As a Filipina and Black woman, I am excited to support and celebrate Filipina/x/o and all intersectional identities that make up the beautiful ecosystem and tapestry that represent the FilAm experience in the Bay Area and beyond.”
LEAD Filipino is a nonprofit organization that works to increase FilAm civic participation, grassroots leadership, and culturally responsive education in San Jose.
