Today, on September 5th, 2017, the Trump Administration formally announced its rescission of DACA – the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – program that has protected nearly ~800,000 undocumented immigrants that came to the United States as children from deportation. In the state of California alone, we have an estimated 200,000 DACA recipients. Since the program’s inception in 2012, DACA recipients have completed schooling, attained employment and are positive contributors to our communities nationwide.
As a just society, we hope to work to ensure that our nation’s values are upheld in availing opportunities and prosperity to earnest and honest individuals. We are told that the fate of DACA rests in the hands of Congress. Now more than ever, it is critical that we come together and demand that our elected leaders develop permanent legislation that not only promotes the lives of DREAMERS but also promotes comprehensive immigration reform.
LEAD Filipino stands in solidarity with Dreamers everywhere — and the community-based organizations, grassroots groups and advocates that work to empower our communities every day.
